Press Release from Somerset International Group, Inc.
On average, 1.7 million workers are injured each year, and more than eight hundred die as a result of workplace violence according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The most extreme form of violence in the workplace, homicide is the fourth-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States.
“Small businesses are not immune to workplace violence,” says John X. Adiletta, Chief Executive Officer of Somerset International Group, Inc., a security technology holding company formed in 2004 that addresses the increased demand for protection against workplace violence. “They have to provide security precautions to their employees just like big corporations.”
Mr. Adiletta offers some simple tips to protect your workplace from violence, including: making sure to invest in a security camera, locking the door at all times of the day, and using a buzzer system to screen potentially dangerous strangers. In addition, depending on the size of the business, direct access systems may provide additional security.
While safety measures such as text message alert systems and GPS-enabled devices are ubiquitous, these systems often leave employees vulnerable to assault. Small business owners with facilities in large public spaces might consider investing in alternative security options that harness proprietary location systems to create a “zone of safety” around businesses and corporate campuses.
One such system, CAMPUS SECURE, supplies employees with a small keychain fob with a panic button that, when pressed, triggers a signal to an installed, campus-wide proprietary locator system that instantly alerts security to both the identity and the location of the device’s owner.
CAMPUS SECURE’s personal alarm locators (PAL) transmit radio waves that ensure the devices work inside buildings, parking garages, and other locations where cell phone and GPS devices may not have service. Additionally, the device is completely mobile, allowing security dispatch centers to track the triggered PAL, even if the holder is moving. Small businesses that might find the system particularly beneficial are businesses located in warehouses, corporate campuses, or mall franchises.
As national security issues frequently remind us, heightened security may sometimes threaten to impinge upon individual rights; unlike GPS-based systems, CAMPUS SECURE identifies and locates individuals only when the device is activated. “The goal is to increase security, not compromise privacy,” says Adiletta. “Employee safety and well-being is a small business’s most valuable asset.”
