A domestic violence awareness program is offering information to local employers regarding changes to the legislation protecting workers.
The Neighbours, Friends and Families program, operated locally through the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre, has developed a presentation to address changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which came into effect today.
“Neighbours, Friends and Families is a public education campaign designed to raise awareness of woman abuse in our community,” said co-ordinator Angela Corso.
The goal is to ensure women in domestic violence situations have access to the support they need, she said.
The program’s workplace campaign focuses on Bill 168.
According to the section of the legislation concerning domestic violence, “the employer must respond when aware of domestic violence that may expose a worker to physical injury in the workplace.”
Corso said the Ontario government points out the Neighbours, Friends and Families program as a resource for employers who wish to learn about how to comply with that section of the legislation.
She is available to provide a free presentation outlining the campaign to local businesses and employees. As well, people can contact her for information about the section of the Act concerning domestic violence and the expectations on workplaces.
“The campaign is strictly to educate the public about the possibility of risk,” she said, adding it isn’t about how to take direct action or counsel someone living through domestic violence.
Corso said the presentation touches on warning signs of violence, the impact for an employer and expectations under the Act.
Statistics suggest 74 per cent of domestic violence victims are harassed while at work, which puts them and their co-workers at risk, Corso said.
It’s important to note that even if a woman is leaving an abusive home situation, one thing that doesn’t change is her workplace.
Employers can often help make the workplace less of a risk with safety planning, which Corso can help provide.
