Identify and Manage the Threat of Violence
Identifying people who pose a risk of violence and developing plans to contain that risk are critical skills for many professionals.
Violence risk assessment and management must be systematic, comprehensive, transparent, and evidence-based to be most effective.
You can learn essential knowledge and skills to assess and manage the risk of violence at the ProActive ReSolutions Inc. 5-day Threat Assessment and Management Workshop.
A wide range of professionals are urged to attend the workshop, which will be held on October 25 – 29 in Ottawa, Ontario.
Internationally recognized threat assessment experts Stephen D. Hart, PhD and P. Randall Kropp, PhD will lead you through the workshop.
Workshop
Lectures, group discussions, case presentations, and practice cases will be used to facilitate your learning.
Certificates confirming attendance and demonstration of competence will be awarded at the completion of the workshop.
Day 1 – October 25, 2010
Principles of Violence Risk (Threat) Assessment and Management
Facilitator: S.D. Hart
- Learn essential knowledge and skills to conduct violence risk assessments and develop management plans.
- Apply general principles to specific types of violence in specific settings.
- Discuss general risk management principles.
- Discuss the association between violence and mental disorder.
- Learn simple ways to identify and communicate about symptoms of acute mental illness and personality disorder.
Day 2 – October 26, 2010
Assessing and Managing Violence Risk
Facilitator: S.D. Hart
- Review the scientific and professional literature on the nature and causes of violence, with a focus on mental illness.
- Discuss risk assessment procedures.
- Learn to administer Version 2 of the Historical-Clinical-Risk management-20 (HCR-20).
Day 3 – October 27, 2010
Assessing Risk for Sexual Violence
Facilitator: S.D. Hart & P.R. Kropp
- Review the causes of sexual violence, with a focus on sexual deviation.
- Discuss risk assessment procedures.
- Learn to administer Sexual Violence Risk-20 (SVR-20) and Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol (RSVP).
Day 4 – October 28, 2010
Assessing Risk for Intimate Partner Violence
Facilitator: P.R. Kropp
- Review the literature on intimate partner violence, with a focus on personality disorder.
- Discuss risk assessment procedures.
- Learn to administer Spousal Assault Risk Assessment Guide (SARA) and Brief Spousal Assault Form for the Evaluation of Risk (B-SAFER).
Day 5 – October 29, 2010
Assessing Risk for Stalking
Facilitator: P.R. Kropp
- Review the literature on stalking, with a focus on how it differs from many other forms of violence.
- Discuss risk assessment procedures.
- Learn to administer Guidelines for Stalking Assessment and Management (SAM).

Instructors:
Stephen D. Hart, PhD
Stephen D. Hart, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology and a member of the Mental Health, Law, and Policy Institute at Simon Fraser University in Canada. He is also a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Bergen in Norway.
Professor Hart’s work focuses on clinical-forensic assessment in criminal and civil settings, and especially on the assessment of violence risk and the assessment of psychopathic personality disorder. He is (co-) author of more than 150 articles, chapters, and books and more than 300 conference presentations.
He served as President of the American Psychology-Law Society (Division 41 of the American Psychological Association), is Editor of the International Journal of Forensic Mental Health, and is a Director of the
Canadian Association of Threat Assessment Professionals.
Professor Hart has received numerous awards for his work, including most recently the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. He has conducted more than 300 workshops around the world.
P. Randall Kropp, PhD
P. Randall Kropp, PhD, is a clinical and forensic psychologist specializing in the assessment and management of violent oenders. He works for the Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission of British Columbia,
Canada, and is Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Simon Fraser University.
Professor Kropp has conducted hundreds of workshops on violence risk assessment and management for mental health professionals, police ocers, corrections sta, and others in North America, Australia, Asia,
Africa, and Europe. He has frequently consulted with provincial, state, and federal government ministries on matters related to violence against women and children, and the assessment and treatment of violent offenders.
He has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and research reports, and he is co-author to several works on risk assessment, including the Spousal Assault Risk Assessment Guide, the Sexual Violence Risk-20, the Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol, and the Guidelines for Stalking Assessment and Management.
