FEI Behavioral Health, a national crisis management, EAP and work-life company headquartered in Milwaukee, has developed an in-depth white paper on workplace violence.
In the aftermath of the Aurora, Colo., shootings, FEI talks about the warning signs and prevention of violence in the workplace. The workplace not only includes private office buildings and factories, but public spaces like retail shopping malls, grocery stores, colleges and universities and movie theaters. Many of the tips discussed in the white paper can apply to personal safety as well.
The white paper, titled Workplace Violence: Warning Signs and Prevention, focuses on:
- The warning signs to pay attention to in your co-workers
- Could workplace violence be prevented? Hindsight is 20/20
- How a comprehensive EAP can help in the aftermath of a tragedy
- The importance of a crisis plan to help the recovery effort
“Sadly, we are becoming immune to tragic events. Whenever there is a crisis in the workplace, it brings to light the importance of having an emergency plan in place,” said Ted Uczen, president of FEI. “Tragedies also make us ask ‘why,’ and ‘could this have been prevented’.”
While workplace violence cannot be prevented, knowing what warning signs to look for and having a plan to deal with a crisis will help businesses and people recover in the aftermath of a tragedy. It is something every level of the workforce can and should be aware of.
“Our goal is to build better awareness and understanding of workplace violence so that employers, especially those in public spaces, can maintain safe environments for their employees, as well as their customers,” Uczen said.
